Details : One-off drama about Mary, a writer and critic who is befriended by Geraldine, a seemingly friendly young debutante of a similar age, but from a very different background. This absorbing drama, written and directed by the award-winning auteur Stephen Poliakoff, promises to be one of the boldest and most intriguing things you will see on television this year.
It is 1958, and the final debutante 'season'. Mary, a brilliant young writer and critic is befriended by Geraldine, a seemingly friendly young debutante of a similar age but a very different background. What starts as a friendship becomes something altogether more unsettling.
Ruth Wilson plays both Mary and Geraldine. She is the sole star of this completely unique drama - a 45-minute monologue in which one actress plays two women. It is Ruth Wilson's first TV appearance since her BAFTA nominated role as Jane Eyre, and further evidence of an extraordinary acting talent.
The character of Mary, and the mood of this short drama - youthful optimism encountering something darker - anticipates Capturing Mary, also written and directed by Stephen Poliakoff. This stars Dame Maggie Smith, David Walliams, Danny Lee Wynter and Ruth Wilson. [S,SL]
