Details : This surprising, energetic, and gripping film follows teenagers whose bodybuilding obsession is so extreme it's becoming a clinical problem. Followed by 60 Seconds. Most of us go to the gym to lose weight and subtly tone our bodies, if we go at all. Most of us think bodybuilders look gross and unnatural. So why is it that some teenagers are dedicating their lives to this extreme sport?
This surprising, energetic, and gripping film follows teenagers whose bodybuilding obsession is so extreme it's becoming a clinical problem. We delve into the minds of three young bodybuilders, and discover how they got to the point where they wanted to be weirdly big. We reveal how an obsession with bodybuilding can rule your life. And we talk to their families and friends to find out what they think of it all.
The film follows Danny (17) as he diets down for his first big competition, transforming his body in a matter of weeks. He is bigorexic (a clinical obsession with being big) and it has taken over his life. We watch Jack (13) becoming utterly hooked on pumping up his body, and discover what motivates him to want to look like Arnold Schwarzenegger. We also meet a young girl Chapelle (15) who travels to meet her heroine Avril, a female bodybuilding legend.
We ask what impels relatively normal teenagers to stuff themselves with fat, carbs and protein for half the time, then starve themselves for the rest? What makes them want to spend all evening lifting huge weights rather than going out with their mates? And at what point did they decide that being 20 stone, waxed, preened and glistening, wearing only swimwear, was their idea of perfection?
Engaging and human at it's core, this film reveals what drives ordinary young people to enter the weird and wonderful world of bodybuilding, and why they aspire to transform and distort their bodies to grotesque proportions. [S] Followed by 60 Seconds.
Starts 2007-04-02 20:00:00, Ends 2007-04-02 21:00:00 and is on for 60 minutes and on BBC Three
