In a concert given at the BBC's Maida Vale studios in West London, saxophonist Andy Panayi directs an all-star band of musicians - who regularly worked with Alan both in studio and on tour - performing a selection of his arrangements and compositions.
Ganley came into professional music as the era of the dance band faded away and Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie were heralding the arrival of modern jazz. In autumn 1953, he began an association with John Dankworth that was to last for the rest of his life, playing in the very first gigs of the famous pianist's Big Band. He also played in Kenny Baker's Dozen, perhaps the most popular broadcasting jazz group ever, and co-led his own band, the New Jazz Group, with pianist Derek Smith.
